How to support your favorite farmers this winter

Boulder County Farmers Markets

Winter is coming. The heat has been turned up, sweaters and hats have been pulled from storage, and the first frost has hit our Front Range crops, signaling the beginning of the end of the market season.

Shoppers can still expect to find a wide variety of produce at the Boulder and Longmont Farmers Markets over the next few weeks as the latest harvest of root vegetables, winter squash and staples such as onions and garlic head to the market stall.

Now is the time to stock up on your favorite items and choose your favorite way to make them last – whether that’s canning, pickling, freezing, or simply sharing with loved ones.

While our last street markets in Boulder and Longmont will take place on November 19, that doesn’t mean support for our local food producers has to stop. To make eating local as convenient and delicious as possible, the Boulder County Farmer’s Market is adding a new way to shop on our online market: a winter market share.

Think of it as a farmer’s market sampler, where instead of picking up food from a farm each week, you’ll receive a wide variety of produce, protein, and packaged goods from your favorite local producers. With options for small (one to two people) and large (two to four people) slices, the Winter Market Slice is ideal for anyone looking for:

• a way to continue enjoying local food and supporting Colorado growers through the winter months,

• the possibility of “set and forget” rather than placing a personalized order each week,

• and exciting new ingredients and products to help you get out of the recipe rut.

Winter market shares will be available for eight weeks beginning the week of December 5 (no shares are available the weeks of December 20 and 27) and will end the week of February 13. Each share will include fresh produce from Colorado farmers. , meat-based or vegetarian protein options, and a variety of packaged or frozen local produce like pasta, hot sauce, and coffee. Winter Market Share customers can pick up their orders weekly at Boulder County Farmers Markets curbside pickup locations:

Rock: Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the parking lot at the corner of 13th Street and Canyon Boulevard

Longmont: Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to noon at Boulder County Farmers Markets Warehouse, 1821 Lefthand Circle, Unit D

LaFayette: Thursdays 4-5:30 p.m. at the corner of East Simpson Street and Michigan Avenue

Denver: Sundays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at La Source in the RiNo parking lot (3350 Brighton Boulevard)

Pre-orders for the winter market share are on sale until November 20. Invest in a small portion for the season for just $360 ($45 per week) or a large portion for $480 ($60 per week). Through the Double Up Food Bucks program, SNAP customers can receive a discounted winter market slice of $240 for a small slice and $320 for a large slice.

Every purchase of Boulder County Farmers Markets Winter Stock helps elevate local farmers and growers whose incomes are typically impacted during the winter months. Your support of Winter Shares will impact dozens of local vendors and keep them in business year-round.
