Honda financial analyst Asam Sheikh has taken an early lead over Lauren Cotner in the race for Torrance District 3 City Council.
Sheikh had 55% of the vote, based on initial feedback from the registrar, followed by Cotner with just over 45% at 1:48 a.m. Wednesday.
With a population of approximately 23,000, District 3 is in the central region of Torrance and includes the Del Amo Fashion Center, Torrance Refinery, Madrona Swamp, and Civic Center.
Cotner, a team leader in his real estate business, has worked with several service organizations, including Meals on Wheels.
Cotner said she believes crime is out of control in the city and criminals should face tougher consequences.
Sheikh is a senior financial analyst for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. who currently serves on the city’s planning commission. He also sits on the board of the Torrance Education Foundation.
Sheikh, meanwhile, said he had mixed feelings about the SST measure, the city’s proposed sales tax increase and how the money would be used. If the tax increase passes, he said, he will ensure the city is held accountable for how the funds are spent. If the tax increase is not passed, he will ensure that public security services are not compromised, Sheikh said.
Torrance voters in three council districts – 1, 3 and 5 – chose representatives in the June 7 primary, completing the city’s 2018 shift from general representation on the city council to representation by district.
